A LITTLE HELP FOR TRYING TO GET ORGANIZED
Start Now
Procrastination is not a good thing. Don't worry about where to start -- pick a corner, pick a drawer, pick a closet -- just start. Momentum will build as you get in the swing of things
Work a Little at a Time
Stuff did not accumulate overnight and it's not going to go away overnight. Plan on getting distracted and tired and allow for it in your schedule. It is easy to start reminiscing and get off track. Keep your goals a manageable size and you will stay more focused.
Have a Plan
Have an idea of a natural progression of your project, but don't get bogged down in the planning. Think of any supplies you may need and get them. If you have something to be recycled, find out who can haul stuff away. Know what you are working towards and be prepared.
Put Things in the Same Place --
All The Time
Practice putting things away. Always put your keys in the same spot. Always put your checkbook in the same spot. Searching for things gets frustrating and very old. This is part of clutter that raises your stress level -- and everyone's around you.
Write Down Critical Information
Get a notebook and record your personal information. Make a note of advisors' names and telephone numbers, then put letters from them away in a file. Record your insurance policy numbers and your agent's name and phone number and then put away your policy. You and your loved ones will be able to find critical information when you need it.
Get Rid of Stuff
If you don't like, use or want something anymore, get rid of it. Ask family members if they would like a particular item before you get rid of it -- you may be surprised at the answer. Make some charitable donations and use the write offs. This part of de-cluttering takes a lot of time so plan on it. Getting rid of some items is particularly difficult. Allow for plenty of time so you don't toss out something in haste you may regret later.
Ask For Help
As grandma used to say, many hands make light work. It's O.K. to enlist family members, friends and volunteers (or a professional organizer) to help you out. You may even find some people who find your stories interesting!
